Canobolas Local Area Command Acting Inspector Brendon Turner said initial investigations indicated a vehicle was stopped at roadworks on the highway about 10 kilometres west of Orange at 2.30pm.
He said a truck travelling behind slowed down and was in the process of braking when the brakes appeared to have failed.
“It was fortunate the truck wasn’t travelling at a higher speed,” he said.
The driver of the truck was breath tested and returned a negative result.
The driver of the vehicle was treated for seat belt injuries late yesterday afternoon and was expected to be taken to Orange hospital for treatment.
Acting Inspector Turner said the brakes would be inspected as part of the ongoing investigation.
