A 46-YEAR-OLD Orange man has survived a head-on collision near Gundagai on Wednesday which claimed the life of his older companion, also from Orange, and left another man seriously injured.

The man managed to free himself from the wreckage but the driver, 72-year-old Raymond Fitzgerald from North Orange, died at the scene.
Mr Fitzgerald died when his Toyota Landcruiser collided with a Holden Rodeo about 25 kilometres from Gundagai.
According Cootamundra Police, one of the vehicles was travelling on the wrong side of Muttama Road, near Coolac, when the collision occurred shortly before 3pm.
Rescue crews found both drivers trapped in their vehicles and fuel leaking onto the road.
The Landcruiser was towing a tractor implement.
The 46-year-old man, whose name has not been released, managed to free himself and was taken to Cootamundra Hospital with minor injuries.
The 40-year-old male driver of the Rodeo was trapped for a short time before being freed and taken to Wagga Base Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
He is being treated for multiple fractures and facial injuries.
