The Meteors take on the all-conquering Breakers - who have won the last nine consecutive titles - at Blacktown International Sportspark in today’s Twenty20 opener, before a limited overs game tomorrow and another T20 on Sunday.
“We play Victoria in round two as well, so it’s a pretty tough start to the season,” the former CYMS all-rounder said.
“But it’s a good way to gauge where we are as a team, hopefully we can grab a few wins.”
Churchland, plagued by a shoulder injury in 2013-14, was desperate for a full pre-season leading into 2014-15 to give herself a chance at becoming a crucial member of the Meteors’ line-up.
Somewhat of a bit-part player last season, she almost got her wish before suffering a car accident which left her unable to train for the opening period of ACT’s preparation.
“Yeah I hurt my back, which was frustrating,” she laughed.
“But I got most of the pre-season in, which was long. I’m fully fit now and keen. I’d really like to take a heavier role in the side this season.”
Last time the two teams met the Meteors upset the Breakers in the T20 semi-final, but were then defeated by Queensland in the grand final.
With current Southern Stars quick Rene Farrell spearheading the Meteors’ bowling attack, and new Kiwi signings Nicola Browne and Sara McGlashan waiting in the wings, Churchland said today’s game is the start of what her side is hoping will be a massive season.
“We have a strong side, and we definitely want to get back into that T20 final and have another crack,” she said.
“But we want to be performing in every form of the game. Personally, I’m just looking to take my chances, and hopefully play my role in the side well.
“Hopefully that could be as a first change bowler. Unfortunately I won’t know if I’m in the 11 until just before play, but fingers crossed.”
