A NUMBER of years ago Orange City Council painted a 1.5 metre white line on the northern side of the entrance to the Sale and Anson streets car park and called it a footpath.

No rail to protect the users from the traffic. Besides having a rough join down the middle there were holes, inspection pits and rough spots, making it hard to use.
I brought this to council’s attention a number of times and they made a commitment to overcome the problem in March when they were resealing the entry.
Eventually the entry was resealed in late April, however the seal only went halfway over the designated footpath area, leaving the join and rough spots and only half a path. This forces pedestrians to walk unprotected on the new surface with the traffic as there is no designated footpath.
However, across the other side of Sale Street on the upgraded Summer Centre site the developer had to install a two metre-wide fully protected walkway to Sale Street with handrails and wheelchair accessories, and contribute to a safe crossing.
Why the difference? Council has not replied to my letter of two months ago asking this question.
