Stewart finished second in the under 15 boys’ individual time trial behind fellow NSW team member Mitchell Wright.
The cyclists were tested over a 10km course which was far from easy.
“On the way out it was pretty flat, but on the way back in there were quite a few hills and it was quite windy,” Stewart explained.
The 14-year-old Orange Cycle Club member went into the event seeded third in the field of 51.
This meant he was the third last rider to attack the course and knew he had done well when the announcer said he’d posted the fastest time at that point when he crossed the finish line.
“I thought I went well because when I finished I was pretty hurt,” Stewart said.
Only Wright was able to complete the course in a quicker time and Stewart claimed the silver medal.
“I was very excited,” the teenager said.
Stewart also represented NSW in the under 15 boys’ road race and criterium where he finished 14th and 20th respectively.
He said he was happy with his results and pointed out the time trial had been his main focus.
After a stellar 2014, which also included finishing second at the NSW titles in the individual time trial and taking out the NSW Country road championship, Stewart is ready for a rest from serious training.
That’s not to say he’ll be off his bike completely.
“I might do the Millthorpe coffee ride on Sunday,” he said.
Do 14-year-old’s drink coffee?
“I’ll have a hot chocolate.”
