Every year, Red Cross stores around the country hold Big Cake Bakes to raise money for the organisation and this is the first year the Orange shop has had a theme for the day.
Staff got into the spirit of the and dressed up as Alice, the Mad Hatter, White Rabbit and Cheshire Cat, offering an overflowing cake display with various Alice-related decorations.
Manager of the Anson Street shop Penny Kariyawasam said it was great to see the small store so crowded with people.
“The volunteers have gone to great efforts to bake such beautiful cakes and it’s nice to see the public getting on board, buying cakes and donating money to the everyday work of the Red Cross at the same time,” she said.
The winners of the Big Cake Bake, judged by Orange resident Delsia Lancaster, were announced at 11am, with Annalise Theakstone taking out best-decorated cake for her Mad Hatter’s checkerboard hat, and sisters Jess and Emma Fisher winning the best-baked cake for their Kit-Kat and Smartie marbled cake.
Students from Gabe Middleton’s Orange School of Rock provided entertainment to shoppers and a raffle of a leather Country Road bag was drawn at the end of the day.
Mrs Kariyawasam said she hoped to raise $2000 over the course of the day, through the sale of the cakes, donations and raffle tickets.
