THE Royal Hotel management was forced to stop repair work at its bottle shop on Monday afternoon after material containing asbestos was discovered at the site.
A section of the bottle shop was cordoned off on Monday and WorkCover NSW staff confirmed they had received a complaint from a member of the public.
Royal Hotel management had already stopped work at the site following the discovery, and was issued a prohibition notice stopping work “until there has been an inspection conducted by a competent person to ascertain if there is any asbestos containing material on the site”.
According to WorkCover NSW staff after the inspection was conducted, the repair work was put on hold.
“WorkCover NSW has been informed that a licensed asbestos removalist will be contracted to remove the material from the site,” the WorkCover NSW spokesperson said.
“Air monitoring has been undertaken at the site and no asbestos fibres were detected.”
Central West Community Union Alliance spokesperson Joe Maric said he was pleased with WorkCover NSW’s response.
“On this occasion I’m pleased at how quickly WorkCover NSW has reacted to community and shopkeepers’ concerns,” Mr Maric said.
“Thankfully the community has been vigilant in their response as well.”
Royal Hotel management declined to comment on the record.
