The library hosts the Orange Purlers, a group of volunteers who meet every Thursday from 10.30am in the library’s knitting corner and spend countless hours and balls of wool knitting squares that will be made into blankets for the not-for-profit organisation Wrap With Love.
The group originally met each week during winter and once the weather warmed up the meetings ceased over summer, but Orange librarian Trudi Mayfield said the gatherings in the knitting corner would now become a permanent part of the library.
“I think we’ve been hosting the knits ins for about four years now,” Ms Mayfield said. “It’s a nice thing to have that space in the library for people to use.”
Wrap With Love relies on thousands of volunteers around Australia like the Purlers to knit squares that are sewn into blankets and distributed across the globe to be given to people in need, including those living in poverty or affected by natural disasters.
Alongside the 40 Wrap With Love regulars, Ms Mayfield, a knitter herself, said there were many other volunteers who had dropped off bags of squares and finished wraps anonymously.
“Last year we sent away 195 completed blankets and 416 more squares,” Ms Mayfield said. “It’s just amazing, people’s generosity, buying the wool and taking the time to knit the squares.”
Ms Mayfield said anyone was welcome to join the Orange Purlers in their efforts, and could meet at the library on Thursdays or knit squares at home and drop them off. If you cannot knit, there are also bags of 28 squares that are ready to be sewn together to form blankets.
The Purlers also need donations of eight ply wool to continue their good work. For more information, ask at the library’s front desk or contact Ms Mayfield on 6393 8132.
