The musical adaptation of the 1998 movie follows the story of New Jersey’s favourite wedding singer Robbie Hart, played by Joshua Cheney, who has burning desire to find the right girl after he realises his dreams of becoming a singer-songwriter are long gone.
That dream girl turns out to be his friend Julia Sullivan, played by Alice Litchfield.
Choreographer Anna Fehlberg said the students had been busy preparing for the show since auditions began at the beginning of term one, rehearsing every Friday night and even giving up time during their school holidays.
“Once you get to performance week, they get really excited,” Ms Fehlberg said. “They get such a big buzz out of performing.”
One hundred students are involved in the performance, with 80 on stage, an orchestra of 10 and a further 10 working behind the scenes as stage hands. Parents have also played a large part in constructing the sets and sewing costumes.
Ms Fehlberg said about 15 boys had performance roles in the musical, which she said is more than they have had in previous years.
“Four or five of them are in year 11, and they’ve been role models for the younger boys who really look up to them,” she said.
The students will perform tonight and tomorrow night from 7.30pm on both nights. Tickets cost $30 for adults, $24 for concessions and $95 for a family of four, and can be purchased through the theatre. For more information, call 6393 8111.
