TWO second half goals secured Orange Ex-Services a win in Saturday’s women’s Premier League Hockey derby against Confederates.

The two teams couldn’t be separated prior to half-time, entering the break nil-all, before Ex-Services struck twice in the second period.

Leanne Kennewell slotted Ex-Services’ first just after the break, and Ali Baker nailed a short corner with just over 10 minutes remaining to secure the win.

After two consecutive losses in Lithgow, to Panthers (5-1) and Zig Zag (3-1), Ex-Services coach Mitch Kennewell said it was a relief to be back among the winners’ circle.

“It was a good win, ‘Feds really stuck it to us,” he said.

“It was tough work in Lithgow for the last fortnight and we knew we needed a win today. We knew it would be tough and the girls played some really good hockey.”

Despite the win, Kennewell lamented missed opportunities, and said his team needs to learn to convert if it is to feature in the 2014 play-offs.

“I was pounding my head against a wall at one stage,” he laughed.

“We probably had 12 or 13 shots on goal, we just can’t get them in the back of the net at the moment. We need to convert, and we need to start doing it soon.

“In saying that, there was plenty more positives to come from the game than negatives, and a win is a win, particularly in conditions like [Saturday’s].”

‘Feds coach Mark Pengilly was diplomatic about the loss, saying his team’s effort could not be faulted.

“I thought we actually had the better of a lot of the game,” he said.

“We had a few opportunities we just couldn’t convert. We defended well, and had some really good passages of hockey.

“We’re improving each week and that’s all we can really ask. We’re looking to next year, and the next few results will go a long way to continuing this rebuilding phase.”
