A MAN of the match performance from Molong marvel Dan Sandford has helped the Magpies maintain an unbeaten start to the 2014 Graincorp Cup southern zone premiership.
Sandford starred in the 10 jersey for the undefeated competition leaders, with coach Andy Hillan praising the burly pivot’s impressive kicking game in the Magpies’ 32-8 victory over the Grenfell Panthers at home last Saturday.
“He’s fitted in really well for us,” Hillan said of the club’s recruit.
“His kicking game was spot on. He’s directing traffic for me really well. His combination with (halfback) Will Oldham, I’m looking forward to seeing that develop over the next few weeks.”
Following on from a premiership winning 2013 season, the Magpies couldn’t have asked for a better start to this year.
Wins over Canowindra and last year’s grand finalists Blayney have been followed by a tough away victory over West Wyalong and then last weekend’s 24-point thumping of the Panthers at the Molong Recreation Centre.
Hillan lauded his side’s defence, easily the catalyst for an impressive opening month to the 2014 Graincorp Cup.
“We’ve worked really hard on that this season,” he said, adding his side’s stout defence will be important ahead of a tough second round that’ll send the Magpies on three of the toughest road trips in the southern part of the Graincorp Cup.
“In the second round we’ve got Blayney in Blayney, Grenfell in Grenfell and Condo in Condo, so that’ll be a big challenge.
“And having been to West Wyalong with the team the week before, I can see travelling is going to be an issue. The boys were a bit flat when they got off the bus.”
Molong tackles Cumnock away in the club’s next match on Saturday, May 24.
