WATER birthing is being offered to mothers in response to the growing number of babies being delivered at Orange hospital.
Director of Nursing Sue Patterson made the announcement on International Midwives Day at the hospital yesterday.
“The number of babies we deliver here at the hospital continues to grow,” she said.
“Last year it grew by 5 per cent and we expect those figures to rise.
“We are very proud we have the expertise amongst our staff to be able to offer this new service.”
Ms Patterson said the maternity unit boasted 32 full-time equivalent staff positions to cope with the growing numbers.
“This option of water birthing, however, will only be offered to mothers who are identified as being low risk,” she said.
Ms Patterson congratulated Orange’s 2014 Midwife of the Year Roslyn Webster yesterday, saying she was instrumental in developing policies and procedures for the new water birthing option.
