By the time emergency services workers arrived neighbours had run from their houses to pull the woman from the vehicle, out through the rear door of her late model Hyundai sedan.
Autumn Street remains closed off between Summer Street East and Byng Street with motorists asked to avoid the area while police carry out their investigation and the vehicle is towed away.
Police are still questioning the woman and witnesses at the scene.
