“More and more people are being diagnosed with cancer. You can’t meet someone who hasn’t been affected in any way,” he said.
This year, 1041 people registered for the relay, but raffle winner Libby Seaman disagrees with Mr Betts on the reason behind the steady increase in participants.
“It’s about the community support and an increased awareness ... that’s why I wanted to do it, because of the community support,” she said.
A week after the relay the committee members are still tallying results and chasing up pledges, but they hope the fundraising total will push past last year’s $168,000.
As of yesterday morning the tally had reached $110,575.
Mr Betts said he expected at least another $60,000 to flow in over the next week, if last year’s behaviour was anything to go by.
But time is running out as online donations close in one week.
Of the 90 registered teams, the Wentworth Golf Club team was leading the fundraising yesterday with $10,631.
