Father James Hodson was the former clergyman at the school before his move to lead the congregation at St Barnabas.
Firefighters were called to the Rocket Street church at 1.40am on Sunday with the building well alight.
Despite their efforts the church was destroyed with the roof collapsed into the historic building.
Anglican Grammar School head of primary Melanie Winters said the loss of the church was felt across the school.
“It was devastating to see him on the news, it was very sad and it really resonated with the kids,” she said.
“There’s things of value that can never be replaced.”
Anglican Grammar School staff will hold a sausage sizzle for their students and teachers tomorrow to help raise funds for the church’s rebuild.
Students and teachers are invited to take part with a sausage sandwich just $2.
“Whatever we raise will go back to the church.”
