Thankfully the weather gods smiled on the players, with temperatures much cooler than the extreme heat that had baked the central west in the weeks leading up to the matches.
The trials kicked off a big week for rugby league in the central west, with the official launch of the May 4 City-Country match to take place at Apex Oval this Wednesday.
Western Academy prevailed in both trials on Saturday, scoring a 48-18 win in the under-16 clash and a 38-18 victory in the under-18s.
Wellington’s Kotoni Staggs and Red Bend’s Matt Woolnough each bagged three tries for Western Academy in the under-16 clash, continuing on from their recent impressive trial form against Newcastle at Mudgee a fortnight prior.
Orange Bloomfield’s Jye Barrow crossed for three tries in the under-18 fixture, while classy Nyngan utility Jackson Hedges was the standout for the Far West Academy side as he bagged a double as well.
