The fire is believed to have started at around 1pm.
Canobolas Local Area Command acting Inspector Yonneka Hill said police witnessed three youths running from the scene. Following a foot pursuit they arrested the 13-year-old boy and expect to arrest the other youths who they have identified.
Acting inspector Hill said damage to the oval was extensive and covered at least 50 per cent of the ground, although there was no structural damage to any buildings on the site.
A police forensic team was at the scene for several hours and an investigation is under way.
“It’s a concern when a fire is lit at any time of year, but it’s especially concerning when temperatures are so hot and there’s a high fire danger,” acting Inspector Hill said.
No charges were laid.
