Wentworth flies the flag in first round of pennants

WENTWORTH started its Central Western District Golf Association pennant campaign with two wins on Sunday at Duntryleague.

The Orange club entered teams in all four divisions and enjoyed victories in divisions three and four.

The division three team accounted for Forbes 4-1, while Wentworth’s division four side had a tight 3-2 win over Forbes.

In the division three matches, Brendan Breitnauer (3 and 2), Pat Moran (3 and 2), Richard Bopping (3 and 2) and Jack Carroll (1 up) enjoyed wins.

This means Wenty leads the division 3B standings after the first round on 1.4 points.

Cowra, which downed Parkes 3-2, is next on 1.3, followed by Parkes (0.2) and Forbes (0.1).

Celebrating victories in division four for Wentworth were Tyler Carroll (5 and 3), Garry Williams (2 and 1) and John McDonald (5 and 4).

Wentworth shares top spot on the division 4B ladder with Parkes on 1.3 points, with Forbes and Manildra tied on 0.2 after the first round.

Wentworth didn’t come out on top in the fist two grades, losing to Forbes 4-1 in division one, and by the same margin to Forbes in division two.

In division one, Jason Hurford (2 and 1) was the only Wentworth player to enjoy a win, while Tony Partridge (4 and 2) celebrated victory for the Orange club in division two.

Ex-Services had two tight losses to Mudgee in its division two and three matches.

Mudgee came out on top 3-2 in both divisions, played in Dubbo.

In this Sunday’s second round, Ex-Services takes on Dubbo at Wellington, while Wentworth has the bye.

Duntryleague starts its campaign this Sunday after sitting out the opening round with a bye.

Duntry will take on Cowra in divisions one and three, Blayney in division two and Manildra in division four.

Duntryleague took out last year’s division one crown and the team is keen to repeat this performance in 2014.

Forbes leads the division 1B competition after the first round with 1.4 points, while Parkes (1.3), Cowra (0.2), Wentworth (0.1) and Duntry (0) fill in the places.

In division 1A, Bathurst leads on 1.3, followed by Wellington (0.2) and Mudgee (0).
