The 23-year-old got a loan for a $50,000 vehicle only months before driving with a blood alcohol reading of 0.142, which is mid-range, when he ploughed the vehicle it into a tree.
Magistrate Terry Lucas said he was lucky he was not severely injured and very lucky he did not injure anyone else.
Hannan had only recently dropped off a friend.
If he had injured another person he could have been looking at a jail sentence, according to police prosecutor Sergeant Andy Bobin.
Hannan’s solicitor Kim Rickards said his client had been suffering from mental illness in recent months before the crash and his relationship had recently broken down.
Hannan did about $25,000 damage to his vehicle and Mr Rickards said Hannan’s mother had quit her second job so Hannan could be driven to and from work.
Mr Rickards said his client had been taking important steps to see a counsellor and take medication.
“He has exhibited some maturity and contrition,” Mr Rickards said.
“In effect he had a mental rage at the time of committing this offence.”
Unfortunately Hannan did not have an unblemished record said Mr Rickards but he fully accepted that he had done the wrong thing.
Mr Rickards said Hannan had been driving around with no clear destination when he left the road and hit a tree but he owned up to police at the first opportunity.
Mr Lucas disqualified Hannan from driving for seven months and placed him on a section nine good behaviour bond for 18 months.
