THEY turned up with no bikes, because they don’t own one, and no helmets for the same reason, but on Sunday many young people who have not had the chance to use Orange’s skate park were part of the Big Air School experience.

More than 300 young people showed off their skills on scooters, bikes and skateboards at the even, designed to promote discussion among young people about Orange City Council’s plan for a second skate park in Orange.

With events catering for beginners to advanced riders and skaters with highly-tuned skills, it was a day that organiser Jemima Key said was important to young people in Orange.
“I just wish other councils would take a leaf out of Orange’s book in the way Orange City Council supports young people in this city and works hard to make sure events like this are accessible to all young people in the community,” she said.
Ms Key said the Orange skate park was one of the best she had seen.
“A lot of thought and planning must have gone into this skate park because all the crew think it is absolutely fantastic,” she said.
Ms Key said the event attracted participants from all over the central west.
“But we also have children here today from Orange that have wanted to use this skate park but don’t have the means to get themselves a bike and a helmet,” she said.
“As part of what we do with our organisation it is a nice feeling to be able to let those kids have a go and we lend them a bike and a helmet for the day.”
Orange City Council spokesman Alan Reeder said council was trying to engage young people in Orange in the consultation process for a second skate park.
“We really want to find out what they want with this second area for the city,” he said.
Mr Reeder said council was pleased to contribute to the Big Air School event as part of that process.
Ms Key says young people can look forward to the event’s return to Orange in April.
“Council has already asked us to return for Youth Week,” she said.
