But for the last two weekends on the footy field, his son Jack has been calling the shots.

The father and son have lined up for Orange CYMS in their Group 10 first division matches.

James has a wealth of experience to call on having played rugby union for NSW and Australia before enjoying a professional rugby league career with Balmain from 1989-92.

The 47-year-old said pulling the boots on again was an easy decision.

“I was taking (Jack) to games and to training and I thought I may as well have a go, too,” James said.

“I only do it (play) if their numbers are short.

“I love it. Training is a bit tough.”

James and 17-year-old Jack have lined up together in a handful of union games in the past but this was their first time playing league in the same team.

“He bosses me around,” James laughed.

“He tells me where to go and I do what he says.

“I play in centre or on the wing. Jack plays half or five-eighth.

“I think he’s going great. He’s having fun, which is what sport is about.”

James said he has no worries about his son playing in a men’s competition.

“He’s smart enough to know he’s not the biggest fella,” he said.

“The other guys don’t put him in positions where he’ll get exposed.

“In defence, he doesn’t try to kill anyone, he just makes effective tackles.”

So, could this be the launchpad for James to play in Group 10’s top grade for CYMS?

“I think the first grade players can rest assured there is no pressure on their positions coming from me,” he laughed.
