ORANGE CYMS flexed their muscles on the Group 10 premier league competition with a 50-28 win over the star-studded Cowra Magpies at Wade Park yesterday.
Cowra’s 2010 campaign has been boosted by former NRL player Joe Williams joining Fred Briggs and coach Ian Hindmarsh in the black and white and many were tipping the Magpies to inflict CYMS with their first loss of the season but the green and golds out-scored their opponents running in nine tries to five.
Turning in another five star performance to get his side home, CYMS captain-coach Mick Sullivan said he couldn’t be prouder of his team’s effort after losing Group 10 back rower Garrett Field during the week.
“This is our most rewarding win,” Sullivan said.
“The guys we had to call in because we lost Garrett during the week, he’s found some work which is a big blow for us, it is a good show of the depth in the club.”
It didn’t take long for the home side to open up their account with speedmen Tim Bassmann and Matt Williamson scoring in the corners while Cowra also looked strong with the ball with big centre Steve Ingram crossing the stripe taking the score to 10-4 by the 20-minute mark.
Cowra hit the lead with tries to lock Greg Hilton and barnstorming centre Warren Williams in quick succession but the ensuing 20 minutes belonged to CYMS centre Ben McAlpine.
The classy three-quarter scored 16 points leading into half-time, finishing off some brilliant lead-up work by Sullivan and fullback Kurt Beahan, to take his side to the break with a 30-16 lead.
Cowra began the second stanza in a flurry with Williams scoring his second and third tries of the match to get the visitors within two points but CYMS moved up a gear and blew the Magpies off the park.
Four-pointers to giant prop Terawhiti Cooper, McAlpine and a double to Beahan gave CYMS their best start to a season in recent memory.
Sullivan lauded the brilliance of his backline who, after losing five-eighth Trent Green after 10 minutes with an knee injury, still managed to run rings around the black and white defence.
“I believe it is the first time CYMS have gone four from four,” he said.
“They’ve got a big pack and for our guys to stand up, there is a bit of steely grit at the club at the moment and we try not to let teams get on top of us. Obviously our classy backs, Tim Bassmann, Matty Williamson, came into the side and did a great job and the try-scoring freaks in Benny McAlpine and Beahan who love a try, it was really good.”
Cowra’s mentor, Ian Hindmarsh, believes CYMS are one of the teams to beat this season but claims the first side this year to get their defence in order will be in the box seat for the title.
“Obviously defensively, it was a pretty poor game,” Hindmarsh said.
“It would have been nice if we were the 50 and they were the 28 but it is not a big concern, it is only early days. CYMS looked well, I thought they played well and attacked well but we defended probably the worst we have all year.
“We’ll look at our defence, it is not something that we can’t fix, we do have issues with it but we’ll go back and work on it and hopefully improve for next week.”
McAlpine finished with a tally of 26 points for the home team and, along with Beahan and lock Ben Gosper, was among CYMS’ best, while for the Magpies Joe Williams looked dangerous and centre Warren Williams was unstoppable.
