WITH four state titles safely in his possession, Dean Brus now has his sights set on Germany and a place in the two-man Australian team for the service pistol world championships next year.
The Orange shooter added the NSW service pistol and service pistol unrestricted titles to his resume last weekend and is now chasing a spot on the first Australian service pistol team.
"That's been a personal goal of mine for a while, to represent Australia but it's game on and there are some competitors out there that are very keen to also win it," Brus said.
"The most important thing that has happened in my shooting career is happening right now. It's a two-man team so it's game on."
Brus also won two titles at a state shoot in Wagga Wagga a fortnight ago so he is well placed with the three highest individual scores and next March's national championship to push for a place in the team.
"I shot a 1484 at Wagga and that's the national record so if I can put two more of them in I'll have a few blokes a bit nervous," Brus said.
"I'm at the pointy end. I've got one good score on the board now so the rest of them are looking at it.
"You certainly can't count your chickens and one score isn't going to get you the ticket. You've got to put three in and back it up with a good result at the nationals."
The Orange Pistol Club member will travel to Victoria in October to post another score at a sanctioned shoot with another competition scheduled for Orange on November 4.
Brus is looking to post good scores at these two shoots to establish a gap between himself and the rest of the competition heading into next year's nationals.
It is the second year running Brus has scooped the pool in the state service pistol arena after winning three titles last year.
"I went down and took both of them out too so they'll be getting sick of me I suppose," Brus said. "I was really pleased because that is the highest score I've ever shot at state's on Saturday."
