SHOOTER Dean Brus continues to venture out into new disciplines and compete well, the Orange competitor now picking up the air pistol and showing his versatility.
Brus had a busy schedule last weekend when he shot at the Australian Grand Prix on Saturday and at the Western Plains Championships in Dubbo on Sunday.
"I shot in the Grand Prix at the Olympic Venue in Sydney and I had rather disappointing results in rapid fire but very pleasing results in air pistol," Brus said.
"I just purchased a new air pistol and just started competing, actually that was my first competition. It was a qualifying shoot for Oceania and the World Cup in India and the top eight shooters are accepted into the finals and much to my surprise I progressed into the finals. I was pretty happy with that.
"I shot a score of 561 out of 600 and the winner was on 570. It was very, very pleasing considering it was my first competition."
Brus picked up the different pistol to improve his rapid fire and service pistol skills.
"Air pistol is a great training aide for the other disciplines and that's basically one of the reasons why I bought it and I've been training pretty heavily with it,'' he said.
"I spoke with Phillip Adams, who is coaching me, and he's given me some good pointers on what to rectify in that match and he thinks I've got a fairly bright future in it so I'll persist with it."
During Easter Brus set a national record in the 25m service pistol and last weekend he set a State record in the same discipline at Dubbo.
"I came second in service pistol unrestricted with a score of 882 out of 900. I came first with a new State record in 25m service pistol and I'm very pleased with that. I previously held the State record at 632 and I bettered that and shot a 635. I've had a pretty good weekend I suppose."
Brus said the introduction of air pistol to his training schedule was a clear benefit.
"Air pistol training is definitely helping because it's got a lot to do with trigger control and sign alignment which is why it's such a good training aide," he said.
This weekend Brus travels to Lightning Ridge for the Opal Open and later this month he will compete in the IFFF Western Plains Championships at Dubbo, which targets Olympic events.
