CYMS Sheeradiance kept their Orange Netball Association division one finals dream alive with an impressive win over clubmates CYMS Gladiators on Saturday.
Sheeradiance, a school-aged side, got out to an early lead and were never headed as they recorded a 61-38 win in the penultimate round at Anzac Park.
The win piloted the Cindy Gilchrist-coached side into the fourth and final position in the top four.
They can guarantee finals action in their first season if they defeat fellow school outfit Kinross 1sts in the final round this Saturday.
“We’re very excited, to be honest,” said Gilchrist, whose side has won four and drawn one from its past five matches.
“We’re hitting form at the right time. A lot of those risks we took earlier in the season in terms of combinations are now paying off for us now.
“We’ve got three really solid defenders and three really solid shooters and things are really starting to click for us now.
“We need to have a really good win against Kinross next week to make it, I think. We’ve beaten them before this year so we’ll take a bit of confidence into it.”
The loss was a double blow for Gladiators, who have slipped from fourth to fifth after successive losses over the past fortnight.
To make the finals they will need to defeat KWS Kelly’s and hope Sheeradiance lose to Kinross 1sts in the final round.
Gilchrist believes her side’s defence will prove invaluable if they qualify for the finals.
“Georgia Duffy and Kendall Draper were excellent in defence. We were really solid in the mid-court but it was our defence that was the key to us winning the game. They are terrific for us,” she said.
“It was a solid team effort today. Our defence all over the court was outstanding. Our shooters shot at 80 per cent all day, which makes a big difference obviously.”
In the other round 14 ONA matches, Life Studios Westoil defeated Canobolas A 59-27, High A made light work of Kinross 1sts 56-32, Robin Hood downed KWS Kelly’s 44-27 and Robin Hood Fitness Perfection won on forfeit over KWS The Exchange.
