FOR years the green and gold colours of CYMS have been synonymous with rugby league, hockey and cricket in Orange.
Now after 18 months of planning, the famous CYMS colours will be running around netball courts at Anzac Park this weekend.
Orange CYMS Netball Club combines St Mary’s and St Joey’s junior clubs and James Sheahan senior teams all under the one banner.
CYMS chairperson Sue Ryan can’t wait for the start of the Orange Netball Association competition this weekend.
“This has been 18 months in the making to get to this weekend,” Ryan said.
“Finally we get to see our girls in action on the courts.”
The new Orange netball club will boast 46 teams and close to 400 players from Netta right through to division one.
The club’s two division one teams, Gladiators and Sheeradiance, are tipped to do well in the tough competition and Ryan is hopeful of both sides pushing for finals berths.
“Both sides are having their first training sessions and they’re looking promising,” Ryan said.
“The school side (Sheeradiance) will hopefully be in the top five, which is very achievable for those girls.
“The ladies’ side (Gladiators), we’re hoping for them to make the semis, which is the top four.”
The relatively inexperienced Sheerad-iance outfit will be mentored by Cindy Gilchrist, while the Gladiators will be coached by Kate Foran.
“There are only three players in the younger side with first division experience,” Ryan said.
“The average age of the squad is 15.”
Ryan is tipping Westoil, Robin Hood, High A and Kelly’s to pose CYMS with their biggest challenge throughout the year, but she is confident of a successful season.
Sheeradiance have a tough start to their season with a first-up meeting against defending premiers Robin Hood, while Gladiators will take on Canobolas A.
