BANK West (John Bird) was the sponsor of Saturday’s two man ambrose which attracted a good field of members and visitors to the tee at Wentworth. The perennially consistent pairing of Geoff Wright and Craig Stojanovic took scratch honours on 58-3/4.
It is easy to run out of superlatives to describe the form of the Rosser brothers, Bobby and Nathan, who took the long drive half-way up the hill on the fourth, as they went on to a handicap win on 59-1/4. This was just one clear of Snowy Cousins and Mort Turnbull the runner-up pairing on 60-1/4, with the Dark Shark and Dave Delsorte in third place on 60-1/2.
The ball cut in this one, 62-1/2 on countback, made by my early tip for the event Rob Farrimond and Don Dillon. The B grade long drive went to Matt Wright and C grade to “Chef’” Moore. The overall nearest pin award to the sponsor’s representative John Bird, a 70cm effort on the 13th.
For the members diary Saturday, October 24 is round two of the 36 hole Dave Wright Memorial Trophy encompassing the second round of the club four ball championship.
Another asterisk you can employ, member or not, is Thursday, October 22 night golf. For full details and entry form contact the pro shop staff.
On Sunday last the V8s were at Bathurst but the real power lap was that of Peter Antrobus, playing in the open afternoon stableford round. In very ordinary weather Peter carded a career round 40 points to get the prize, ahead of club president Simon on 35 points.
For the ladies it was the in-form Lee Pickett on 36 points from Es Davis 33. Nearest pins in this one to Jo Bray, Lee, Lou Stevens and Marg Hobby, for the men Peter Collins, Chris Riley, Bob Whitty and Darrell Duff.
This week’s Sunday round is set down for the mixed foursomes championships over 27 holes, a must-play event. As we got to press the early favourite paring is that of Bob Farrimond and Lee Pickett. For the handicap look for the Grenfell versus Ross match to be thereabouts.
Mid-week golf at Wentworth saw a nine hole win on Tuesday to Frank Cashman on 24 points. This one is on every Tuesday.
Thursday’s open stableford round went to Dave Rouse on 41 points from Simon “Cook’’ Andrescen 39, with Dallas Kelly on 38. The fourball in this one was taken out by Gerard O’Neil and D Newell 45 points with nearest pins to D Newell, Frank O’Neil, Gerard and Snow. For a game and four ball partner in this one just be on the tee from 9am Thursday and we will take good care of you.
Tomorrow at Wentworth members will tee up in round one of the Dave Wright Memorial Trophy in conjunction with round one of the 36 hole club four ball championship. The early favourites for this one, the Geoff Wright - Craig Stojanovic pairing that have been unstoppable of late.
There is of course plenty on offer including the McArdle Space Age Carpet Cleaning eagles nest and birdie competition, and as is the case in golf on the day the chances are wide open. Wide enough I hope to bring myself and Mario into contention.
Having composed himself after drowning four balls off the ladies tee on the 18th recently and following a sabbatical to Cobar, Arthur Fuller has Bill Keogh as a partner - at least this one is not on aggregate.
For the each-way bet why not Dom Connaughton back in a pairing with Mark Crombie. Round two of this one will be played on Saturday, October 24.
The lady golfers will be out Saturday for a game, just turn up and again on Wednesday if the weather permits, the ladies will get their Norm Murray round underway.
