The man broke into the eye surgeon Basil Crayford’s Kite Street premises late on Monday night where he stole a small amount of money.

He then smashed down two glass doors at the nearby St Vincent de Paul’s charity store in McNamara Lane and attempted to take money from its empty cash register.

It’s believed the shop’s alarm system may have caused the man to flee the scene, however not before his image was captured on Vinnies’ new CCTV security system.

Vinnies’ diocesan executive officer Frank Moes said the incident occurred at around 10pm on Monday night.

“We can see the time on the footage,” he said.

“It looks like he just picked up a rock and threw it at the door.

“It was a deliberate action.”

He estimates it would cost the charity between $600 to $800 to replace the doors.

Mr Moes said he can’t believe that in less than a week after the security system was installed he’s already captured two people doing the wrong thing.

“At least this one was kind enough to make his identity known by leaving his identification behind,” he said.

“We found a wallet behind the counter.

“It really is disheartening, demoralising and disappointing.”

Police took a 30-year old man into custody at lunchtime yesterday. H is currently helping them with their inquires.
