 Stink over effluent

Stink over effluent

03 Jul, 2009 07:39 AM
ORANGE City Council will not rule out taking Cadia Valley Operations to court over a dispute involving the future supply of water to the mine.

Both parties have engaged legal representation over a 1998 deal that gave the mine free access to 13 megalitres of Orange’s treated effluent each day.

The confidential agreement stated Cadia Valley Operations would pay nothing for the effluent for the life of the mine.

However, Orange City Council believes the proposed $2 billion Cadia East project constitutes a new development and voids the existing agreement.

Cadia Valley Operations argues it should not have to pay for the effluent as the proposal is an extension of mining operations and is therefore within the parameters of the 1998 deal.

If the effluent supply was cut off or reduced the mine would be unable to meet its projected daily water requirement of 56 megalitres.

It is unclear how much money Orange City Council wants for the treated effluent.

The mine recently paid Central Tablelands Water $2190 a megalitre to access water from Lake Rowlands.

Both parties were yesterday unwilling to be interviewed on the matter but did release short statements.

The dispute between Orange and Cadia was raised during a forum on Wednesday evening where mine management addressed concerns about the environmental impacts of its expansion plan.

Water issues were the major concern of the 80 or so people who attended the meeting, including Greens MP Lee Rhiannon, her party will oppose the $2 billion Cadia East development.

Nearby landholders and conservation groups also expressed concern about the loss of 238 hectares of native vegetation and the formation of a 225 hectare subsidence zone.

Councillors Jeremy Buckingham and Neil Jones yesterday said they will move a motion at the next council meeting calling for a report to be prepared on the status of the effluent negotiations.

Both will push for the report to be made public.

The problem with the Orange City Council is that; 1 they dont have any money to spead on road and anything things around the city, but if there a chance to get money of business that run at the profit like Newcrest or any another business that I have not name they will. eg cadia give money to orange city council to keep cadia Road and another key roads around the area, what happen to that money, 2 water, people in the town are bitching about the mine takening the water of the city and say that why orange is on level 5 at the moment. I think that the Orange City Council should say were that money that the mine has payed for the water for and were they have got it from, and I say that it not from the Orange supply but from another means. 3 effuent water. how much has the mine save the Orange City Council in the last 10 year plus getting the effuent. If the mine did say were are closing up shop and moving to a another city or area of the world and Email / electrox moves of shore this town will become a ghost town .. no job and no were for young people to get train up in jobs. I think the mine and the people around the mining area can work out problem that can or maybe problem over the next 30 years , they have done it for the last 10 years.

Orange city council need to pull it head in and stop holding it hand out to get more money for nothing. Cadia is doing a good service with taken the waste water and using it.If there wasent for Cadia mine where will all the waste water go down the creek out to Ophir and into some poor town drinking/water supply. Oh the poor farmer my heart bleeds. they complain about the dry,the water, how bad the crops are.If can get off the land most of them will take the money and run. I beleve that wasent for Cadia Orange would be worst off.Think about that Council/and the socall people who fear change.

Cadia are getting too big for their boots!! You would think they would gladly pay for any treated water given to them!! I would like to see the environmental impact study of the new development and the future water plans fully released to the public!!

What will Orange Council do with the poo water if Cadia doesn't buy it? Back to sending it down one of the creeks down to Molong where all Orange's waste now goes?

James, yet again you have not done any RESEARCH. Newcrest has made the EA available to the public. You can find it at the newcrest website http://www.newcrest.com.au/sus_ca dia_east_project_env_Asmnt. asp or via the Department of Plannings website http://majorprojects.planning.nsw .gov.au/index.pl?action=vie w_job&job_id=41 I suggest you might want to reserve making any further comments until after you have read and understood the submission.

Hey a realist. Research is over rated. I like to work things out by myself!! Look into my crystal ball and have my tarot done!! They are all telling me that orange will have a severe water shortage in ensuing years and i can also see a lunar landscape with cadia superimposed on a big hole in the ground!!

Well James it looks likes it just goes to prove the old saying "Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story". So from now on I can sleep at night knowing all your comments are fictional made up bull. If only I had realised earlier.
