Cabonne Council yesterday closed the road to the summit of Mount Canobolas but was concerned some motorists would damage the gates in a bid to get a better snow experience.
Maintenance overseer Allan Chandler said Cabonne had to replace the road closure gate at Mount Canobolas due to vandalism several times a year.
“The gates obviously are closed for safety reasons,” Mr Chandler said.
“We close the gates up and people get up with their four-wheel-drives and pull them down.
“We have to replace them about four or five times a year.”
Residents are being reminded fines and charges apply for damaging gates and driving on a closed road contrary to notice.
Police, the State Emergency Service and National Parks and Wildlife Service have also warned people not to travel on closed roads.
“In the past cars have been stuck up there and the SES has had to pull them out,” NPWS Mount Canobolas ranger Steve Woodhall said.
Access to the summit has been closed off from the intersection of Canobolas Road and Old Canobolas Road.
The roads may not be opened again until next week.
“We will probably keep them closed for three days,” Mr Chandler said.
“The area right under the summit doesn’t get any sun on the south-east side.”
Yesterday’s snow was caused by a strong cold front across south-eastern Australia.
Orange is not expected to see anymore snow this week.
Today’s temperature is expected to reach nine degrees accompanied by windy showers.
Orange showgoers can expect sunny weather over the weekend and temperatures around 10 degrees.
