But she needs help from people who also have a disability to share positive messages with school students.
“Our program needs a presenter with a disability to work with an able-bodied presenter so we can try to get through to the children and help them understand that someone living with a disability is in many ways just like anyone else,” Ms McCarthy said.
The program ran in district schools last year for the first time, with much success.
“It is really important to try and break down the barriers surrounding people with disabilities,” she said.
Ms McCarthy said volunteers would need to be available on Tuesdays and would be given full training.
“The training session is only about four hours,” she said.
