One Orange councillor thinks so and has asked Orange City Council to consider a traffic light system most frequently seen in metropolitan areas to resolve the problem.
Councillor Reg Kidd wants the council to consider scatter crossings at the intersection of Summer and Anson streets and Summer Street and Lords Place.
Scatter crossings, seen in parts of Sydney, and also regional centres such as Albury and Wagga, stop all lines of traffic and allow pedestrians to cross the whole intersection in any direction.
The system also allows traffic turning left and right to do so without having to wait for pedestrians to cross the road.
“I’ve seen them in Albury and they work well and they work fantastically in Sydney near Town Hall,” Cr Kidd said.
“Once people get used to them they work well.
“They’re better for pedestrians, people on mobility scooters and motorists.
“And they’re better for traffic flow.”
Cr Kidd proposed the idea at last month’s council meeting as a way to tackle traffic build-up at certain intersections in the CBD.
The council has since written to the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA), which would have to approve a move to a new system.
The council has initially asked the RTA to consider scatter crossings only at the Lords Place and Anson Street intersections with Summer Street.
“Those are the two that seem to be the busiest and where you get people crossing and drivers can’t get around the corner,” Cr Kidd said.
