Yesterday Mr McCarthy began his first computer class at the Orange Senior Citizens’ Centre to develop his knowledge about computers, which he finds is a necessary skill in today’s society.
“Computers are a fact of life,” he said.
“This space age has left me behind.”
Mr McCarthy was encouraged by his family to take the course, as well as his own yearning to improve his knowledge in the area.
He says age is no barrier to learning new things.
“You are either learning or you are finished,” he said.
“I want to know how to use a computer and just understand them.”
During yesterday’s class, tutor Ron Savage said he and the class were impressed by Mr McCarthy’s enthusiasm to learn at an age when most people do not.
“Lots of seniors say they are too old to learn, but they are not too old,” Mr Savage said.
