That’s the opinion of councillor Sam Romano, who is proposing council build a public toilet facility as an attachment to match the CWA Hall in Robertson Park.
“The access to the toilets would be from the exterior but I’d be happy to put a door in from their [the CWA’s] building,” he said.
“There’s no way I want the public to use their toilets.”
Cr Romano said the council would be able to do up the hall to “make it look like it should” as part of the work.
“I’m not bullying them, I’m asking them to work with the community ... we’d all be better off,” he said.
“If they’ve got a big function they can open the door from the inside straight into the public area.
“It gives them an extra toilet.”
But CWA secretary Elma Woolfe said there was no way the proposal to upgrade the hall would change members’ minds, as the social implications that could result from a public toilet would still be the same.
“I don’t think it [the upgrade] is necessary,” she said.
“The hall serves a very good purpose... I can’t see much they could do to the building.
Mrs Woolfe said the CWA did the best it could to maintain the hall, including a recent upgrade to the toilets.
The council has allocated $260,000 to establish a public toilet in Robertson Park.
Cr Romano said the council would have to review the cost of installing the toilets before they knew how much could be spent on hall upgrades.
Mrs Woolfe said she hoped council representatives would be able to speak to the CWA members at their next meeting.
“It will be quite an opportunity for them to look at the building,” she said.
