Many motorists that once drove through Eugowra on their way to and from Canberra are now travelling through Canowindra and Forbes due to the road's poor condition.
Business owners blame the dangerous Eugowra Goolagong Road for noticeably less visitors and money coming into the town.
"Visitors are very important to our business, and if we don't have then then we have to shut down,” Somerset Lane Clothing part-owner Elaine McKenzie said.
Cabonne councillor David Hyde said it was important to repair the road and its signs to maintain the community's vitality.
"A couple of sections on the road are really bad," he said.
"We have noticed a drop-off in numbers.
"Visitors are very important and this is why we need to have an inspection with the engineering and technical services director."
Mr Hyde said upgrades were important to ensure road safety as well as boost tourism in the town.
The fact the Eugowra Goolagaong Road is also used as a bus route has further encouraged locals to see it fixed.
Cr Hyde said he hoped Cabonne Council would receive a local government financial assistance grant to help upgrade the road.
