The Weather Channel’s senior meteorologist Dick Whitaker said this week’s vigorous front across south-east Australia had signalled the beginning of a cold snap.
Yesterday temperatures in Orange dropped to a chilly 0 degrees, and peaked at 4.6 degrees.
“It was a real wintry day there’s no doubt about that,” Mr Whitaker said.
A light snowfall was recorded in Oberon.
Mr Whitaker said today’s weather was expected to be marginally warmer than yesterday and, after a cold -2 degree start to the day, the temperature is expected to rise to 7 degrees.
The cold conditions will continue on Friday with the top temperature for the day not expected to exceed 9 degrees.
Mr Whitaker said conditions for this weekend’s Orange Show “didn’t look too bad”.
“You’ll just need to rug up, it will be chilly” he said.
Scattered light showers on Saturday will clear with temperatures expected to range between 1 to 9 degrees.
“Sunday will be mostly sunny hitting a glorious 11 degrees in the afternoon although in the morning it will drop to as low as -3 degrees,” he said.
Mr Whitaker said Orange residents could expect a cold winter.
“It’s quite likely that you’ll see snow in Orange this winter,” he said.
