Orange councillor Jeff Whitton says he has been approached by Bathurst Road residents who are concerned about antisocial behaviour that takes place in the lane adjacent to D’Aquino’s Liquor Specialists.
“It seems to be a place for people to go, handout out, drink and do other things,” Cr Whitton said.
“People are there at all hours of the night and day but it seems to get a lot busier on Friday and Saturday nights.”
Cr Whitton said the lane had been been in place for several years and had long been used as a short cut for school children walking to sporting events.
“We need to see if the laneway serves a purpose by giving the community access,” he said.
“But if it doesn’t serve a purpose then we need to look at closing it.
“I’ve heard that the locals are too scared to walk down there anyway.”
Cr Whitton has asked council staff to assess the lane and provide a report on its usage to councillors at an upcoming council meeting.
