ORANGE is looking for a new police commander after Superintendent Geoff McKecknie has been promoted to Tuggerah Lakes Command. Supt McKechnie, who transferred to Orange from Broken Hill, will leave in late December or early January and the position will be advertised internally from today. Supt McKechnie, who will have served in Orange for three years when he transfers, says he is looking forward to a new challenge of a promotion to a larger command with 200 officers. "I think it's time I experienced another area with different challenges as I have spent so much of my time in Western Region." He said one of his regrets was not being able to see the building of the new police station. "I have enjoyed my time in Orange and it was satisfying for police to win at last year's business awards. "I have worked on some positive jobs but also some extremely sad ones. The search at Caves Creek for Mrs Tilston and Mr Cowan was a major challenge," he said. He said since coming to the command he had overseen implementation of a number of systems. "We have had some pleasing results in this area, which is one the public don't get to see." Head of Orange's Crime Prevention Committee, Cr Glenn Taylor said he was sorry to hear the news that Supt McKechnie was leaving. "I think he's done a great job and one of his best qualities was his accessibility and although it is Orange's loss, I wish Geoff and his family well," Cr Taylor said. Cr Taylor said Supt McKechnie brought a stability to the patrol commander's position after the position changed hands seven times in three years. The position will be advertised internally in NSW Police with existing patrol commanders from other areas of the State given the opportunity to apply first.
