Adam James Reilly, 40, of Franklin Road, entered Pollet's Martial Arts Centre about 7pm on July 20 and walked into the connected Holistic Healing shop, which was unoccupied.
At the same time a martial arts class was being run at the front of the business.
Reilly loitered near the back door and walked behind a desk inside the Holistic Healing shop and stole a new point-of-sale computer that was described as being of similar size and appearance as an iPad.
The machine cost $1099 and had not yet been set up.
The theft initially went undetected because the business had to close to the COVID-19 lockdown.
However, the point-of-sale machine was discovered missing on July 23 and the victim reviewed the CCTV footage and contacted police.
Reilly was arrested at Orange Police Station at 7.15pm on July 28 when he went to report as part of his bail conditions.
According to police he was wearing the same clothes as shown on CCTV footage from the Holistic Healing business.
Solicitor Ellen McCutcheon said "the motivating factor for this was to serve his [drug] addiction," but Reilly has since sought treatment for his drug addition and mental health issues stemming from an assault that put him in hospital earlier in the year.
Magistrate David Day gave Reilly a 12-month full-time jail sentence with a three-month non-parole period from November 24 to February 23, 2022.

"The community has for a long time been absolutely fed up with property crime committed for drugs," he said.
Reilly had appeared in court in person and was taken into custody in the court room.
Mr Day said the sentence takes into account the onerous custody Reilly faces in jail due to COVID-19 protocols, he also took into account Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Reilly has been diagnosed with following the assault, as well as his participation in community-based drug and alcohol programs.
