Former Orange resident Bevan Shields has been named the new editor of The Sydney Morning Herald.

Mr Shields started his career at the Central Western Daily.
"I am humbled, honoured and hungry to lead the best newsroom in Australia," he said.
"I love the Herald and our newsroom full of exceptional journalists.
"The new year gives the Herald a huge opportunity to reset and restate who we are and what we believe in and rededicate ourselves to journalism that informs, challenges, entertains and surprises our wonderful readers and subscribers."

Mr Shields will take over the role in January when he returns from London where he has been working as the Europe Correspondent for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.
Prior to that he spent five years based in Canberra as federal editor and Canberra bureau chief for The SMH and The Age.
Mr Shields has also previously worked as the news director of Fairfax Regional Digital Media and the health reporter at the Illawarra Mercury.
He replaces Lisa Davies, who left The SMH in November after about five years in the role.
Mr Shields will work with the SMH's deputy editor Cosima Marriner.
"I'm looking forward to coming home and catching up with family and friends," he said.
Mr Shields is a former student of Canobolas Rural Technology High School.
