Balgowlah woman and former journalist Laing is co-writing the five-part series called Welcome to Our Country, with the first book Somebody's Land released in November.
This book broaches the subject of terra nullius, a Latin term meaning 'nobody's land' that was used by white settlers who arrived in Australia.
Laing and AFL legend and proud Adnyamathanha and Narungga man Adam Goodes co-wrote the books together, but she said the idea was prompted by a dinner table conversation with her son.
"He [Harvey] came home from preschool one day and were just sitting around the dining table and out of the blue I heard him reciting an acknowledgment of country," she said.
"I just stopped in my tracks and I looked at him."
Laing said while Harvey may not have fully understood the words he was saying, it left her emotional with an overwhelming sense of hope.
After reaching out to Goodes, who at the time had a one-year-old daughter Adelaide, the pair decided to team up to write the books.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"Ellie and I saw an opportunity to create something we could be very proud of - a resource for parents and their younger children around Indigenous culture," he said.
"As a new father, with my daughter now approaching the age where she will start school, I'm so proud to be publishing a series of books about Australia's Indigenous history."
I was a parent wanting to have a conversation with my son, but felt largely woefully uneducated.

Laing said they've turned complex issues into stories that are easy to understand and beautifully illustrated by Barkinjii artist David Hardy. "I was a parent wanting to have a conversation with my son, but felt largely woefully uneducated to be having those conversations," she said.
"My one term of Aboriginal history back in Year 7 back in 1995 was just not doing to cut it.
"What we know now is different, how we talk now is different, and I think a lot of parents and carers feel much the same.
"We want parents and carers to get as much out of this book as kids do because in many ways it's our kids who are leading the way, they're the ones who are being exposed at preschool and acknowledgements of country, not parents."
Somebody's Land: Welcome to Our Country by Adam Goodes and Ellie Laing, illustrated by David Hardy, is published in hardback by A&U Children's and is targeted at ages 4 to 8. RRP: $24.99
