Dodds takes over from Daryl Kennewell and joked that some around the club still haven't got used to the change.
"It's a bit strange and I don't think everyone's got quite the hang of it. Some people are still calling Daryl," he said.
"Daryl has a lot on his plate and he's been doing it for quite a few years now. He's been talking about stepping down and I just put my hand up.
"I've done a little bit at Kinross when I was younger but it was really good to take the leadership role and try to take the team forward. It's really interesting to be in the inner loop of the club and planning what's going on."
Centrals finished in ninth place for the 2020/21 season, ahead of only the winless students.
With a change to the finals structure this season allowing five teams to make the finals rather than just four, Dodds was hopeful they could fight for some postseason cricket.
"We were pretty close last year in quite a few games," he said.
"I think we just have to be aggressive. We start on the back foot sometimes and if we take that aggressive mindset I think it will pay off in the long run."
Dodds had a stellar year with ball in hand last season, taking 35 wickets in all competitions at an average of just under 18.
With a leadership group consisting of Graeme Judge, Colin Starkey and vice-captain Adam Shepherd, Dodds was confident his performance on the field wouldn't suffer as a result of the added responsibility.
"It can take a toll, but I think it's trusting the rest of the team," he said.
"Having Shep there will help manage while I'm trying to do my thing. Let me do my thing with the ball, concentrate on what I can do when I'm bowling and then when I'm not I'll take control of the team again.
"It's a give and take and always hard to do."
He'll have a tough opening task on his hands as Centrals kick off their campaign against last year's semi-finalists, Rugby Union.
