In an effort to improve the atmosphere in the central business district, he wants to see Bathurst Regional Council string up lights over two blocks of William Street.

It would imitate the look of Summer Street in Orange, which has decorative lights hanging over the road.

Cr Aubin's notice of motion specifically requests that council "investigate the possibility of putting decorative lights down William Street from Russell Street to Durham Street".

He said that this is something he has wanted to do for some time, but had been told by former finance director Bob Roach that it wasn't feasible.

"I've asked for it for a while now, even back to the Bob Roach days and Bob came back to me with the answer that we couldn't do it because, going crisscross down the main street, we'd have to attach the lights to privately owned buildings," he said.

The idea was put in the "too hard basket", but now the circumstances have changed.

"Now there's new light poles that have been put all the way down the street from Russell right down to Durham, so we're in a position now that we could use the light poles to crisscross the lights down the street rather than go to buildings," Cr Aubin said.

"That's why I brought it up now. The light poles are up, we should be able to do it now."

He said the lights would make William Street more inviting, particularly around the festive period and during major events, like the Bathurst Winter Festival.

"When you look at the lights down the main street of Orange, they are beautiful, and that's what I want to replicate. Get some festive atmosphere, but keep them up all year round," he said.

Regarding the cost, Cr Aubin said he didn't think it would be an expensive project.

Councillors will have the opportunity to have their say at Wednesday's ordinary meeting, which will be live streamed via council's YouTube channel.
