Matilda May Cain, 24, of McLachlan Street, had been driving her black Jeep Cherokee in the early hours of Saturday, August 28, when she came to police attention because of the damage to her vehicle and because she had accelerated quickly.

According to police, officers had turned on their lights and sirens and followed her for around 150 metres before she pulled over on Dalton Street.

Cain admitted that she had been drinking alcohol at her friend's place before getting behind the wheel in order to drive to her boyfriend's house.

She allegedly said she had consumed her last drink around 20 minutes prior to being stopped.

"In speaking with the accused, it was noted her breath smelled of intoxicating liquor and her speech was fast and nervous," police said in a statement which was submitted in court documents.

"The accused appeared moderately affected by intoxicating liquor."

After being submitted to a breath test which gave a reading of 0.192, Cain was arrested and taken to Orange Police Station.

There, she reportedly told officers that she had drunk four vodka and pineapple mixers earlier that evening.

In Orange Local Court on Monday, Cain's solicitor Mason Manwaring said his client had successfully completed a traffic offender's program since her offending and it had given her a much better understanding of the harm caused by drink-driving.

The court also heard that she had entered a guilty plea at the earliest opportunity.

In sentencing, magistrate David Day said her behaviour had been an "accident waiting to happen" and she was lucky she had escaped causing any serious accident that night.

Cain was convicted of high-range drink-drinking and sentenced to a community corrections order for 12 months.

The 24-year-old was also fined $1,100.
