However, according to police, when Scott Anthony Griffiths, 50, of March Street, was stopped after leaving Orange Local Court on the afternoon of June 16, he allegedly told officers that he didn't need a driver's licence because he was a "sovereign citizen".

The senior constable who witnessed Griffiths driving had just appeared in court as a police witness to the driving offence he was disqualified over.

During Griffiths' latest court appearance, his solicitor Gerry Stapleton said Griffiths had actually driven home because his mother was not answering the phone and he was expecting the worst.

He added that a serious physical assault on his client 13 years prior had left him with injuries so debilitating he needed a disability pension.

Magistrate David Day accepted that Griffiths had been foolish and impulsive but was not "thumbing his nose at the court".

He was convicted, disqualified for six months and fined $330.
