The school will be closed on Wednesday as a precaution.
Students and teachers were told on Tuesday evening that the school was going to be locked down.
All staff, students and households were asked to isolate at home and boarders were asked to isolate on site as Vista Lodge.
Dubbo MP Dugald Saunders said the positive COVID case was isolating.
"The case was identified after becoming symptomatic on 9 August and were tested on 10 August," he posted on Facebook on Tuesday night.
"Nine close contacts who have been identified to date, are in isolation, and either have been tested, or will be tested as soon as possible.
"Investigations and contact tracing is continuing. It isn't yet known how transmission occurred."
Additional testing services are also being established at Wellington Health Service, which will be open from 10am.
Anyone in Dubbo with symptoms of COVID is urged to get tested.
Drive-through COVID-19 testing is currently available at the Dubbo Showground between 8am and 4pm or walk-in tests can be done at Manera Plaza from 8am until 4.30pm.
COVID-19 testing is not available at Dubbo Hospital. This service has been relocated to the testing clinic at Manera Plaza.
