Central West Police District Chief Inspector Peter Atkins said the hoodie-clad thieves removed flyscreens at several premises as they tried to gain entry.
He said they did break into a Collwood Crescent house at about 2.20am on Tuesday and stole the keys to a car.
However, he said the blue Holden Commodore ute crashed into a tap at the front of the house and the thieves abandoned it there.
Chief Inspector Atkins said the earliest report was of offenders attempting to break into a Breen Street house about 1am.
Two additional houses were targeted in Breen Street.
Following the Collwood Crescent break-in, a car was broken into at a Kenna Street house about 3am-3.30am with items stolen.
"We had two attempted break and enters in Molloy Street," he said.
"That was about 4am-5am. The flyscreens were removed at the two residences."
Chief Inspector Atkins said police were reviewing CCTV from the residences and neighouring properties.
He said with the time frames police were investigating links between the various incidents.
He said police were looking into several lines of enquiry about the offenders.
Chief Inspector Atkins urged people to ensure their cars were locked and their keys were secured.
One of the victims, who asked not to be named for fear of retribution, said his house was targeted in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
"It's frightening when you're on your own and you hear a sound in the middle of the night," he said.
"Then to get up and find a broken gate and realise someone tried to get into your house.
"I hope the police track them down and lock them up."
Anyone with information is urged to call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or Orange police station.
