James David Dennis, 39, of Raines Place, was charged with intimidation after he confronted the other man who was walking towards a bus stop near Raines Place with a school-aged child about 7.55am on October 15, 2019.
According to police, Dennis walked up to the victim and said, "you shouldn't have dogged me for stealing your wallet. Now I'm going to run in on ya and kill you and the kids".
However, the victim told Dennis to wait while he put the child on the bus.
"I will come back here and flog you," the victim said.
Dennis then rode from the scene on a push bike towards Cootes Place and the victim and child continued walking towards the bus stop.
Dennis was in custody when he appeared in court via an audio visual link for sentencing.
Solicitor Mason Manwaring said Dennis had been in custody for "a significant period" for unrelated matters after he was refused bail.
Mr Manwaring said Dennis is to be sentenced for that matter in the district court at a later date.
Magistrate David Day read aloud what Dennis said to the victim in the presence of the child.
"I'm the last of his worries aren't I," Mr Day said referencing Dennis' district court matters.
"[He] pleaded guilty to one count of intimidation, it's a threat."
Mr Day said Dennis had a bad criminal record but he agreed with Mr Manwaring that the offence did not meet the custodial threshold.
"The intimidation itself is towards the lower end," Mr Day said.
He convicted Dennis without further penalty for intimidation with intent to cause fear.
