Charlie Bubb is set to return to the ring on September 11, less than three months after a razor close decision loss to George Mann at Perth, a bout that was for the prized WBC world title.
Like any hopeful champion, 'The Smiling Assassin' was devastated after the defeat, but is using the result as motivation to get back into the winner's circle, this time in the K1 arena.
Bubb will square off with the experienced Marco Tentori as part of Darwin's NT Fight Series. The pair will fight for the WAKO Australian title.
He's two weeks away from officially entering training camp, but the Orange product reflected on the Mann fight and what it's done for his mentality.
"As soon as that fight ended I knew why the judges gave it to him," Bubb said.
"I let George have too many points in that last fight, I need to fight a lot smarter.
"In the lead-up to that last fight I was doing a lot of cardio, but this time around I'm looking to do more skill building."
According to Bubb, he wasn't fighting intelligently enough and was letting Mann get away with too many telling strikes, mainly kicks to the body.
"I was obviously hurt from it," he said.
"But, even Michael Jordan lost his first finals series. I'm making a statement that I'm not going anywhere."
While the transition over to K1 is fairly seamless for Bubb, there are some key differences to Muay Thai.
"There's no elbows which is unfortunate, because I love my elbows," he said.
"This fight is going to be more of a karate-style of match-up... just because of the way he [Tentori] fights."
Just like the Mann fight, this contest will be decided over three five minute rounds, a time frame Bubb and his camp are feeling good about.
"We don't think he's going to be able to keep up," he said.
Over in Western Australia, Mann is sidelined due to a hip injury but Bubb still wants that rematch when he's back into the swing of things.
"He can have a tune-up fight first, and even if he loses the title, I still want that fight," he said.
"I hate having that black mark on my record."
