A Concept Trail Plan prepared for Orange City Council has found there was potential for more trails on the mountain than had been previously considered.

The report by mountain bike planning group DirtArt follows several months of work investigating the mountain undertaken by various groups.

The research also discovered areas of Indigenous significance and rare vegetation previously unknown to the council.

DirtArt's report said these areas of significance were "no-go' areas for the mountain bike trails.

"It is clear a complex of interconnecting sites exists around Young Man Canobolas and its surrounding areas and as such this whole area has been mapped as a 'no-go' site rather than separating the disparate sites," it said.

"This is inline with the cultural understanding this is a ceremonial and highly significant area to the local Aboriginal community and as a result this entire complex will be avoided."

The report to council's meeting on Tuesday night has identified a series of levels of how close trails can go to sensitive areas.

Researchers also found areas of weed infestation and damage caused by feral pigs and other animals on the mountain.

It is proposed 104.4 km of mountain bike trails would be submitted as part of the request for the project's approval.

That includes 71.7 km within the Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area, 27 km in Glenwood State Forest and 6.3 km on Cabonne Council land.

Trails covering skill levels ranging from beginner to expert have been included in the plans.

"The design of the Concept Trail Plan takes into consideration feedback from community and stakeholder groups wishing to see a more environmentally sympathetic design developed, as well as opportunities to construct a route which appeals to a wider audience and highlights the unique scenic qualities of the location," it said.
